LOKO for beginners

From LOKO Kennisdatabank

LOKO represents the students of Leuven at higher educational institutions, the city of Leuven and the police. It does this by bringing together the kringen - which are actually the student councils of their programs - and thus taking decisions and positions. LOKO is the umbrella organization for kringen in Leuven. LOKO initially acts as a representative and is responsible for matters related to student facilities such as accommodation, food, mobility, diversity, etc. within Leuven. In addition, we are engaged in the field of cultural, sports and international matters. In addition to that representation, LOKO also offers services and support to kringen, other associations affiliated with LOKO and in some cases also individual students. These services and support include training, rental services, the reservation of meeting rooms, subsidies and much more.

Why do we do this?

LOKO wants to protect the quality of life of students in Leuven and, where possible, improve it. We do this because we think it is important that the student's voice is heard. An individual student often gets lost in the bigger picture. We'll try to give that student a voice anyway. We also believe that studying, developing and learning are more than what you learn from your books. So we want to encourage as many students as possible to also roll up their sleeves and encourage their entrepreneurial urge. With the experience of our team, which often includes many old-timers from other organizations such as kringen, we also want to continue to improve student operations.

Who is part of LOKO?

  • Members: the kringen of Leuven, represented by their presides and other representatives of the kringen, are the members of our General Assembly (abbreviated AV, the highest decision-making body of LOKO) and take all positions.
  • Directors: the Daily Board, elected at the AV, takes care of the daily operations of LOKO. The Board of Directors provides advice, takes care of financial matters and designs meerjarenplanningen.
  • Representatives: representatives for all official meetings are elected at the AV.
  • Staff members: they take care of practical work and won't do representation work. They can, however, provide substantive and practical support to the coordinators or mandataries.
  • Project employees: within certain departments there are individual students who voluntarily choose to help with certain events. If they are given responsibility for a specific project or for a part of the operation, they are called project managers.

Different departments

The different departments take on a specific area of interest for the operation. The departments are LOKO Centraal, LOKO Cultuur, LOKO International and LOKO Sport. In addition, we also have a number of internal services, namely the communication service and the finance department. Veto is a somewhat more independant part of the organization. Most departments consist of a (sub)department, which includes all LOKO employees and consists of work meetings with representatives of the kringen. LOKO is based on three pillars: representation, events and services and support.
